Placement – Lab Operations Engineer


Located within the Daventry manufacturing site, the Daventry Technical Centre is responsible for the design and development of new and existing variants of V12, V16 & V18 diesel and gas engines up to 4060 horsepower used in applications such as mining, locomotive, marine and power generation.

§ Working under the guidance of the support engineer / supervisor, the placement engineer will be involved with working in a cross functional team with strong links to the Performance, Mechanical Development & other groups in Daventry and in the USA.

§ Placement activities will include various Lab and Test cell improvement projects and working with state of the art measurement equipment. A major part of this role is to come up with improvements using six sigma tools and implement those improvements to the Lab Operations processes to optimize test cell and build area asset utilization without impacting data quality.

§ Troubleshooting test cell issues using seven step methodology and communicating test cell status to the test cell customers on a daily basis.


§ Preferred Discipline: Mechanical Engineering/Automotive Engineering/Electrical and Controls Engineering.

§ Self-motivated and able to manage own projects.

§ Attention to detail.

§ Interest in knowing how things work.

§ Ability to work and communicate with cross-functional groups.

§ Practical approach to support technical investigation and evaluation.

§ A sound understanding of mechanical Engineering principles and calculations, with the ability to apply them.

§ A keen interest in internal combustion engines.

Training Provided:

  • Cummins standard training for new employees: Engine build awareness, introduction to six sigma and other professional practices.

  • A mentor will be there to guide you through the training and development period. The mentor will also assign the work plan, provide regular feedback on performance and suggest improvements where ever feasible. Tools and skills training will be provided on:

  • Calterm III (Cummins engine calibration software)

  • Test cell software like Asset and Comptek.

  • Engine controls & calibration

  • Engine performance

  • Emissions calculations and equipment

  • IMechE mentor provided to work towards professional status via MPDS scheme.
